The Happiest Baby on the Block

The book “The Happiest Baby on the Block” by pediatrician, Dr. Harvey Karp¬†educates parents on how to calm and soothe fussy and crying babies. Many babies suffer from what Dr. Karp calls the Fourth ¬†Trimester, which is the baby’s first 3 months out of the womb. Dr Karp reviews a serious of 5 “S” steps for calming a crying baby. These 5 steps include swaddling, side/stomach position, shhh sounds, swinging and sucking. For a complete description of the 5 steps, read the book or watch the DVD. It may be helpful to become familiar with the steps prior to the birth of your baby.

I purchased this book right after my oldest son was born. While I read it and tried to apply the 5 steps, it was tough for me. The book was helpful but I could not follow all steps fully.  It was great for giving me pointers and ideas of what to do with my fussy son. If I had read this prior to his birth it probably would have been better because I would have had more time to properly read the book and understand the ideas and purpose behind each step. The book is not a perfect solution but it helps!
