The Happiest Baby on the Block

The book “The Happiest Baby on the Block” by pediatrician, Dr. Harvey Karp educates parents on how to calm and soothe fussy and crying babies. Many babies suffer from what Dr. Karp calls the Fourth  Trimester, which is the baby’s first 3 months out of the womb. Dr Karp reviews a serious of 5 “S” steps for calming a crying baby. These 5 steps include swaddling, side/stomach position, shhh sounds, swinging and sucking. For a complete description of the 5 steps, read the book or watch the DVD. It may be helpful to become familiar with the steps prior to the birth of your baby.

I purchased this book right after my oldest son was born. While I read it and tried to apply the 5 steps, it was tough for me. The book was helpful but I could not follow all steps fully.  It was great for giving me pointers and ideas of what to do with my fussy son. If I had read this prior to his birth it probably would have been better because I would have had more time to properly read the book and understand the ideas and purpose behind each step. The book is not a perfect solution but it helps!
