Humidifiers

Babies and young children get about 6-10 colds per year.  One way to treat the cold is to put a cool mist humidifier or vaporizer in the room.  A warm mist humidifier is fine but the danger is that the water in it can get hot so you will need to keep your baby away from it.

There are 4 types of humidifiers:

1. ultrasonic – produces cool mist but also disperses microorganisms and minerals from the water tank

2. impeller – uses a high-speed rotating disc or fan to make the mist but also disperses microorganisms and minerals from the water tank

3. evaporative – uses a fan to blow air through a wick or filter so does not disperse microorganisms and minerals

4. warm mist – boils water to produce steam which is then cooled and released into the air

A few tips:

* It’s best to use distilled water instead of tap water in the humidifier.

* Follow the manufacturers directions and clean the humidifier regularly.
