Purchasing a Changing Table

As you embark on your search for a changing table, here are some points to remember:

  • Choose a sturdy changing table.
  • Check the height and width to make sure it fits your space and your needs.
  • Size up storage – are there shelves for baskets, cabinets, or drawers for diaper changing essentials.
  • If you are short on space – you can put a changing pad on top of a dresser, table, bed, ground etc.
  • Go without a changing table – create a mobile station (for example – put a folding changing pad and all other diapering essentials in a basket and change diapers anywhere).
  • Older changing tables or antiques are safe to use – just check the sturdiness.
  • If you buy a changing table with wheels, make sure the wheels lock.
  • Consider convertibility – once you do not need the changing table anymore, check to see if you will be able to use it in the future as a desk, dresser etc.
According to the latest voluntary standards by ASTM International, changing tables with a flat side should have barriers on all four sides. If you do buy a table without barriers or you use another piece of furniture then buy a removable changing pad that can be secured to the table. Make sure you buy a pad with contoured sides and has a baby restraint strap.
