My Review of Disney “Planes”

Last night I had the opportunity to take my family to a screening of the Disney movie Planes. The film is a spinoff (although it is NOT a Pixar film) of the hit Cars and but this time it features high-flying friends. Originally planned to be released direct-to-video, Disney realized they had something and decided to send Planes to the theater. The movie is about Dusty Crophopper (Dane Cook), a low flying crop duster who has has a fear of heights. With the support of his friends and mentor, Skipper (Stacy Keach), Dusty is able to achieve his dream of competing in a race around the world.

The movie is a little slow going the but once you get about 30 minutes in you are introduced to the fun and excitement. Many reviews have been critical about Planes but if you look at from the perspective of a kid, you will enjoy it for what it is, a fun animated film with visits to countries such as India, Nepal and Mexico sprinkled with pop culture references.

I am not a huge TV or movie person, let alone animated films. I watch them for my children, but I was actually pleasantly surprised by Planes. This one held my interest the entire movie…it was fun to watch. I will be honest, my 6 year old was hesitant about the movie, he said it was a “copy-cat” and was therefore not excited to see Planes. Surprise, surprise, he enjoyed it a lot!

Make Planes your family’s last hoorah before school starts!

Planes is rated PG and is in theaters, Friday, August 9, 2013.
