In mid-February, Graco recalled 3.8 million car seats due to buckles getting stuck if liquids or juices harden in them. Well today Graco has expanded the recall to include an additional 403,000 car seats. These additional car seats have the same buckle so they can also get stuck by food and drinks, making it difficult to remove children in case of an emergency. In some cases, parents have had to cut harnesses to get their children out of the car seat.
The expanded recall includes these car seats:
Car seats sold between 2006 and 2014 – Argos 70 Elite, Ready Ride, Step 2, My Ride 65 with Safety Surround, My Size 70, Head Wise 70 with Safety Surround, Nautilus 3-in-1, Nautilus Plus, and Smart Seat with Safety Surround
This additional recall does not end the dispute between the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Graco, because the NHTSA wants Graco to include 1.8 million infant car seats in the recall because those car seats have the same buckle.
What to do:
The Signature and the QT buckles on Convertible and Harnessed Booster car seats are the only buckles affected by this recall. If your car seat has a square red button, your car seat already has a new buckle and there is no need to contact Graco.
Graco offers a new and improved replacement harness buckle to affected consumers free of cost. If you have registered your car seat with Graco, you will automatically receive a Consumer Notification Letter with instructions on how to order a buckle repair kit. If you have not registered your car seat, click here to place your order. You may continue using your car seat until your buckle repair kit arrives. To reduce the chance of difficulty unlatching the buckle while you are waiting to receive your buckle repair kit, users should clean their buckles according to the following instructions.
