Last week when I was perusing through Urban Outfitters, I stumbled upon their table of BDG Mom Jeans. Needless to say, I was shocked and stopped to look. I almost tried them on but I didn’t because I did not have time (thank goodness). Well this week I started reading a few articles online that are saying that mom jeans are back. Now I wish I had tried them on to see what the hype is all about.
Mom jeans were popular through the 80’s and even 90’s when low rise jeans became uber-cool. Since the 1990’s mom jeans have become super unpopular and parodied, until recently. The comeback of mom jeans is due to the revival of 80’s and 90’s clothing, such as crop tops, flannel, layering and now mom jeans. The revival of mom jeans is to counter balance all the low rise jeans that have been so popular for so long.
Nnot sure what mom jeans are, here is the Wikipedia definition:
This style usually consists of a high waist (rising above the belly button), making the buttocks appear disproportionately longer, larger, and flatter than they otherwise might. It also tends to have excess space in the zipper/crotch and leg areas. The jeans are usually in a solid, light-blue color, with no form of stone washing or fading. Other attributes of the style often seen are pleats, tapered legs, and elastic waistbands.
Even though mom jeans are back, you need to proceed with caution if you choose to invest in a pair. You need to choose the right ones for your body type and make sure the rest of your outfit is flattering so your whole ensemble does not look frumpy and dumpy. Just don’t do the Jessica Simpson if you go the mom jean route.
Iintrigued by the new trend yet? Try them on and see for yourself, you may actually be surprised and like them. Many retailers are currently carrying mom jeans. I think I will refrain after seeing pictures and reading more about them. They are not for me but don’t let me sway you, go online and see for yourself.
Still, not convinced? Mom jeans are even showing up on celebrities recently.
President Obama even likes his mom jeans. After being ridiculed for years, Obama, recently said this in an interview with Ryan Seacrest: “I’ve been unfairly maligned about my jeans. The truth is, generally I look very sharp in jeans. There was one episode like four years ago in which I was wearing some loose jeans mainly because I was out on the pitcher’s mound and I didn’t want to feel confined while I was pitching and I think I’ve paid my penance for that. I got whacked pretty good. Since that time, my jeans fit very well.”
Need one more reason? We all loved the original Beverly Hills 90210 in the 90’s. They were the cool kids and they all wore mom jeans.
More people seem to dislike the mom jean trend so I can’t see it catching on, but I could be wrong because when I was at Urban Outfitters, there was a woman in her 20’s trying to find her size in another color of the mom jeans. This was after trying them on, so she wanted them. Do you think the mom jean trend is here to stay?
