Philips AVENT BPA Free Microwave Steam Sterilizer

Even though I do not think sterilizers are necessary, I will try to be partial about the Philips AVENT BPA Free Microwave Steam Sterilizer. It is a popular item among parents so it is good to know more about it.

This Sterilizer combines the benefits of steam sterilization with the convenience of a microwave. With the capacity to fit 6 9 oz bottles, nipple and caps, it is large enough to fill a whole days worth of bottles in one run. One run in the microwave for 2 minutes and 99.9% of all bacteria is removed from the items.

To use, load the sterilizer, fill with water, lock on the lid with clips and microwave for 2 minutes. The contents remains sterilized for up to 24 hours as long as the lid is not removed. The sterilizer can also fit breast pump accessories, smaller bottles, pacifiers, teething toys etc.

The Philips AVENT BPA Free Microwave Steam Sterilizer is easy to use and does its job but I am still not convinced that it is necessary to have. It is important to sterilize a baby item before using for the first time (out of the package) but sterilizing can be achieved by putting the baby items in a pot of boiling water. Sterilization used to be more  important when clean water was harder to come by (earlier than the 1950’s) but now hot, clean water, soap and thorough scrubbing is enough to ensure a clean item.

I do not own a sterilizer, I rely on cleaning well, and that has served me well. Every so often I will run the items in the dishwasher and or in a pot of boiling water. My children have never gotten sick from a dirty bottle so I am confident that what I am doing is enough.

If you still feel like you want a sterilizer then the Philips AVENT BPA Free Microwave Steam Sterilizer is as good as any.
