Parenting Styles Defined

In the past few years, we have heard in the news about “helicopter parenting and “attachment parenting”. Surprisingly, these are not the only 2 types of parenting styles out there. Until I read this article in The Babble Out, I did not even know about a few of these parenting styles.  Read the article in The Babble Out for a full detailed explanation of each parenting style. We all knew that everything we do has labels, but this is some serious labeling to something that humans have been doing since the beginning of time (maybe not to the same degree of parenting, but wow, times have changed).

*Authoritative Parenting – Parents who are responsive to their child’s emotional needs.

* Slow Parenting – Keeping it simple with life, activities etc…

* Neglectful Parenting – Sadly, this speaks for itself.

According to psychologists, there are only 4 major groups of parenting, so some of these additional terms may be subsets of the larger groups. The 4 groups are Authoritative, Authoritarian, Permissive and Neglectful.

One thing to keep in mind as a parent, is not to get too caught up with these terms. Do what you think is best and safe for your child. Just remember, the way you parent will affect the way your child will develop and how they will be as an adult. There is no right or wrong (as long as they are safe) and there are no clear cut lines between parenting styles. As with all human behavior, psychologists, cannot fit our behavior and personality into neat little packages, so parenting styles can have blurred lines.
